The classic word-guessing game — free, no download, no sign-up.
How to play hangman
Hangman gives you a hidden word and its category as a hint. Pick letters one at a time: every correct letter appears in the word, every wrong one adds a piece to the drawing. Solve the word before the figure is complete — six misses and the round is over.
On a computer you can simply type letters on your keyboard; on a phone or tablet, tap the on-screen keys. Use the category menu to practice a single topic like Animals or Countries, or leave it on All categories for a surprise every round.
A good opening: start with vowels, since almost every English word contains at least one of A, E, I, O or U, then move to the most common consonants — R, S, T, L and N. Short words are often harder in hangman than long ones, because fewer distinct letters means fewer safe guesses.
About hangman
Hangman has been played with pencil and paper for well over a century — on school desks, on road trips, on rainy afternoons. The rules have never needed to change: one hidden word, a handful of allowed mistakes, and a little tension in every letter.
This online hangman keeps the game exactly as you remember it and adds what paper cannot: eight hand-picked word categories, a win-streak counter, and a board that plays as well on a phone as on a desktop. Every word list is curated by hand — no obscure jargon, no impossible words — so every round feels fair.
FAQ
Is this hangman game free?
Yes — completely free, with no account, no download and no hidden paywall. Open the page and start guessing.
Can I play hangman on my phone?
Yes. The letter keys and the board are sized for touch, and the layout adapts to any screen, from a small phone to a widescreen monitor.
How many wrong guesses do I get?
Six. Each miss draws one part of the figure — head, body, two arms, two legs. The round ends when the drawing is complete or the word is solved.
What kind of words can appear?
Words come from eight curated categories: animals, food and drink, countries, sports, jobs, nature, household objects, and science and space. Almost all are common dictionary words — the only proper nouns are country names and a few planets.
Can I play hangman in Spanish?
Yes — switch to ES at the top of the page for a fully Spanish version of the game, with its own hand-made word lists and the letter Ñ on the keyboard.
